What is OPT?
Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 students to work in the US for up to 12 months after graduation, with possible 24-month STEM extension.
Timing is Critical
File between 90 days before and 60 days after graduation. OPT must start within 60 days of graduation.
Required Documents
I-765 form, passport photos, I-20 with OPT recommendation, transcripts, and payment.
Filing Fee
Current filing fee is $410. Additional biometrics fee may apply.

Meet with Your DSO
Schedule an appointment with your Designated School Official (DSO) to discuss OPT eligibility and requirements.

Request OPT Recommendation
Your DSO will update your SEVIS record and provide a new I-20 with OPT recommendation.
Gather Required Documents
Collect all necessary documents for your application package.

- Passport-style photos (2 copies)
- Copy of current I-20 with OPT recommendation
- Copy of passport biographical page
- Copy of I-94 arrival record
- Copy of F-1 visa

Part 1: Personal Information
Enter your family name exactly as it appears on your passport and I-20.
Enter your given name exactly as it appears on your passport and I-20.
Enter your middle name if applicable, or leave blank if none.
List any other names you have used, including maiden name if applicable.
Part 2: Information About Your Eligibility
Select "(c)(3)(A)" for pre-completion OPT or "(c)(3)(B)" for post-completion OPT.
Write: "F-1 student seeking post-completion optional practical training."
Part 3: Additional Information
If you have any additional information that supports your application, include it here.
Important Notes
- Use black ink and print clearly
- Do not leave any fields blank - use "N/A" if not applicable
- Sign and date the form in blue ink
- Make a copy of the completed form for your records

You should receive a receipt notice within 2-3 weeks of filing. This contains your receipt number for tracking.
Biometrics Appointment
If required, you'll receive a biometrics appointment notice. Attend this appointment to provide fingerprints and photo.

Approval Notice
